Xu Gu
虚谷 [Chinese Painter, 1824-1896] |

| |
A Chinese
painter of the Qing dynasty. His original surname
was Zhu, named Huairen. He was a native of Xin'an,
Anhui province,and lived in Guangling, JiangSu
province.
He was once an official of the army,a nd
became a monk later, named Xubai, Xugu by style
name, Ziyang Shanren by sobriquet.
He made a living
by selling his paintings in Shanghai and Suzhou, and
became well known as a great master and founder of
the Shanghai school.
He was talented in using the
side of brush fluently and boldly. He also excelled
in poetry, prose and portrait. He had a work "The
poetry of Xugu monk". |
